|
Manuscript collections, often also called archives, are the unique documents created by individuals or organizations that record the thoughts, actions, and activities that have become history. These primary documents offer insight into events as they occurred from the point of view of the participants. Manuscripts are the most reliable account of the past, allowing those persons to speak to the present in their own voices. The Library is a valuable historical research center first and foremost because of the richness of the Manuscript Collection.

The collection is of value to those researching the life of the Moon family, civil rights and labor movements, especially the NAACP and African American involvement with the U.S.S.R. and eastern Europe.

The Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland (f. 1903) is a nonprofit organization that plays a central role in identifying, coordinating, and raising funds for social services and educational activities in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as supporting national and international Jewish communities. The collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, trustee and committee minutes, reports, proposals, newspaper clippings, wills, and financial records. Researchers studying the Jewish community, especially in Cleveland, will find valuable material as well as those researching nonprofit organizations, foundations, and social service organizations.

Description:
Mount Sinai Hospital was opened in 1903 with funds raised by the Jewish Women's Hospital Association. Mount Sinai Hospital provided training and employment opportunities for Jewish doctors denied employment in other hospitals, but its community outreach was nonsectarian. After financial difficulties and a sale to Primary Health Care Systems, Mount Sinai was closed in February 2000. The collection consists of reports, minutes, histories, newspaper and magazine articles, booklets, financial records, staff publications, bulletins, medical case histories, drawings, and scrapbooks. The collection will be of value to those studying Jewish hospitals, the health care industry and related training, women's history, medical research, and Russian immigration.
